The Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza still brings back the atmosphere of the 2010 Winter Olympics for me. I remember seeing it burning behind the temporary security fences during the Games, with people crowding around for a glimpse. The scene in this painting comes from April 17, 2016 at around 8pm. I was celebrating my birthday nearby when I noticed that the cauldron had been lit as the sun was setting. People were drawn toward it almost exactly as they had been during the Olympics, and for a moment the excitement of that period came back.
