The New Museum on the Bowery became one of my favourite places to experience the Lower East Side from above. I visited on May 7, 2016 in the mid-afternoon and went straight to the rooftop Sky Room. Only a handful of people were there, and in a city full of rooftops the space felt unexpectedly calm. The figure in the painting stands at the glass balcony looking southwest, jacket slung over one shoulder, almost as if he had posed himself for the scene. One World Trade Center in the distance completes the view.
