New York’s Chinatown has always felt unusually alive to me, with generations sharing the same streets, parks, restaurants and public spaces. This view looks west along East Broadway from the pedestrian path of the Manhattan Bridge. I had heard about a strategically placed opening in the chain-link fence and kept the location in mind for reference photographs. I finally walked the bridge on July 28, 2015 at around 9:30pm after dinner nearby. It became one of the few nighttime paintings in this body of work. I loved the way scattered artificial lights broke the scene into different pockets of colour, while the top of One World Trade Center remained visible in the distance.
