This is one of my favourite New York views, from the Whitney Museum’s downtown home that opened in 2015. The water towers and One World Trade Center in the distance make the terrace feel unmistakably New York. I was a member of the Whitney and often ended up here after walking the High Line. The painting is set on a brisk, sunny February day, cold enough for a winter jacket but warm enough to leave it unzipped. I was also drawn to the bright yellow facade leading onto the terrace, a colour that unexpectedly reminded me of my childhood home. With so much of the museum opening onto outdoor terraces, the view becomes part of the experience of the art itself.
