Vancouver
Gastown Rain
Gastown is one of Vancouver’s oldest and most distinctive neighbourhoods. I have always been fascinated by historical photographs of Maple Tree Square and by how recognizable the intersection remains. I was there on a rainy spring day, taking reference photographs after wandering through the nearby shops, when a woman carrying a yellow umbrella suddenly entered the scene. That flash of colour changed the entire composition. Hotel Europe, Vancouver’s own miniature counterpart to the Flatiron Building, anchors the background, with the Gassy Jack statue completing a view that felt both familiar and cinematic.
