Dragon Boats at Science World, Day

Oil on canvas36 × 48 in / 91 × 122 cmNot Available

I painted Science World again after the nighttime version of the scene was stolen from Ian Tan Gallery in March 2016. It was a strange experience, and making another version felt like the most natural response. This time I wanted the familiar daytime view: dragon boats on False Creek, Science World behind them and the Olympic Village nearby. The location carries a lot of collective memory for Vancouverites, from Expo 86 and childhood visits to summer festivals and afternoons around the water. The reference image was taken on April 28, 2015 at around 5pm, during my first visit back to Vancouver after moving to New York. It was the same day I photographed the scene that became Vancouver Skate Plaza.
